Participatory science—also known as citizen science, community science, volunteer monitoring, public participation in scientific research, and other terms—uses the collective strength and knowledge of the public to gather and analyze data to answer environmental and public health questions. For data generated by the public to have a meaningful impact, quality assurance during data gathering is critical. EPA has created a Quality Assurance Toolkit to help organizations starting or growing a participatory/citizen science project.
The Participatory Science Quality Assurance Toolkit features the QA Handbook and an accompanying video series, orientation guide, and two fact sheets. The Handbook and toolkit are a great tool for those starting out, or those looking to improve data quality documentation for participatory science projects. The Handbook includes: 1) a walkthrough of how to determine the level of documentation that fits your project’s needs 2) customizable templates and 3) a compendium of real-world participatory science QAPP examples.
